Computing Roots of Directed Graphs is Graph Isomorphism Hard

چکیده
The k-th power D of a directed graph D is defined to be the directed graph on the vertices of D with an arc from a to b in D iff one can get from a to b in D with exactly k steps. This notion is equivalent to the k-fold composition of binary relations or k-th powers of Boolean matrices. A k-th root of a directed graph D is another directed graph R with R = D. We show that for each k ≥ 2, computing a k-th root of a directed graph is at least as hard as the graph isomorphism problem.

The Complexity of Boolean Matrix Root Computation
We show that finding roots of Boolean matrices is an NPhard problem. This answers a twenty year old question from semigroup theory. Interpreting Boolean matrices as directed graphs, we further reveal a connection between Boolean matrix roots and graph isomorphism, which leads to a proof that for a certain subclass of Boolean matrices related to subdivision digraphs, root finding is of the same ...
متن کاملOn Graph Kernels: Hardness Results and Efficient Alternatives
As most ‘real-world’ data is structured, research in kernel methods has begun investigating kernels for various kinds of structured data. One of the most widely used tools for modeling structured data are graphs. An interesting and important challenge is thus to investigate kernels on instances that are represented by graphs. So far, only very specific graphs such as trees and strings have been...
متن کاملTenacity and some other Parameters of Interval Graphs can be computed in polynomial time
In general, computation of graph vulnerability parameters is NP-complete. In past, some algorithms were introduced to prove that computation of toughness, scattering number, integrity and weighted integrity parameters of interval graphs are polynomial. In this paper, two different vulnerability parameters of graphs, tenacity and rupture degree are defined. In general, computing the tenacity o...
متن کاملHardness results for isomorphism and automorphism of bounded valence graphs
In a bounded valence graph every vertex has O(1) neighbours. Testing isomorphism of bounded valence graphs is known to be in P [15], something that is not clear to hold for graph isomorphism in general. We show that testing isomorphism for undirected, directed and colored graphs of valence 2 is logspace complete. We also prove the following: If a special version of bounded valence GI is hard fo...
متن کاملClassifying pentavalnet symmetric graphs of order $24p$
A graph is said to be symmetric if its automorphism group is transitive on its arcs. A complete classification is given of pentavalent symmetric graphs of order 24p for each prime p. It is shown that a connected pentavalent symmetric graph of order 24p exists if and only if p=2, 3, 5, 11 or 17, and up to isomorphism, there are only eleven such graphs.
